Who we are, and why.

Our biggest asset is what we believe and who we are. This page covers both.

Philosophy

What we believe

Read a complex world with compound eyes.

READ THE COMPLEXITY. SHAPE THE GAME.

The player, the squad, performance, preparation, condition, environment — these affect one another, and within those relationships the flow of a match and what becomes possible are always changing.

Odonata is a tool for reading that complex world from many angles. There is no single right answer, for a player or for a squad: the same session does not work for everyone, and one standard cannot measure everyone. Sport should have room for more than one right answer.

By looking past what is visible to the structure behind it, the early signs of change, and the chains of relationships, we support the decisions your staff make and help the squad and its players go further.

Read a complex world with compound eyes. And shape the game.

Why “Odonata”

A dragonfly (Odonata)
Odonatathe scientific name for dragonflies

Reading many things at once, and moving forward.
Named after the dragonfly.

Odonata is the scientific name for dragonflies. A dragonfly takes in an enormous amount of information through compound eyes made of countless separate lenses, and adjusts what it does from moment to moment. No single lens sees the picture; the whole compound eye assembles it. That is the emblem of how we read football.

In Japan the dragonfly is known as a symbol of moving forward — it is said never to retreat. It also sees in almost every direction at once. Both are what we are trying to do with data.

Bringing a lot of data together, reading a complex situation, and moving forward with it — that is what we named the service after.

The team

Research (doctoral programmes at the University of Tsukuba), football (playing and coaching with University of Tsukuba Football Club) and engineering (we build the web app ourselves) all sit inside the same team.
